December 12, 2008 – ABB won an order worth $11.5 million to provide power plant equipment for the AmerenUE Taum Sauk Pump Storage Hydro plant in Missouri. The delivery will include an integrated process and electrical system based on System 800xA.
ABB’s completely integrated solution will help retrofit the plant, allowing for improved functionality, reliability and modernization. The Taum Sauk power station is a 440 megawatt (MW) pump storage hydro plant comprised of two units. The project is scheduled for operation by December 2009.
The scope will include ABB products and systems from four divisions – Power Products, Power Systems, Process Automation and Automation Products. This includes instrumentation, medium & low voltage MCC’s and switchgear, protection system, AC/DC auxiliaries, with System 800xA Extended Automation providing the integration foundation for these systems. System 800xA will also control the processes in the plant, including the governor. This turnkey project includes all associated engineering, installation supervision, commissioning, and training.
“We are pleased to partner with ABB and to tap into their vast array of power plant equipment and engineering expertise as we strengthen our AmerenUE Taum Sauk Pumped Storage hydro plant with improved reliability and functionality,” said Mark Birk, vice president, Power Operations, AmerenUE. “ABB worked together with our engineers to develop a practical solution that will modernize our hydro plant and, ultimately, help us keep pace with the ever-increasing power demands of our customers.”
“I had the pleasure of personally witnessing an impressive team effort between ABB and AmerenUE in developing an effective solution for the Taum Sauk plant, which is our first hydro integrated system order in the United States,” said Kevin McAllister, senior vice president and general manager, ABB Power Generation, North America. “One key success factor was our capability and international experience in delivering large pump storage hydro projects. This project represents a significant step in our long-term relationship with AmerenUE as we add more value and take on the role of providing a fully-integrated solution.”
