August 18, 2008 -- ABB won an order from Century Aluminum to provide power and automation systems for a new smelter in Iceland.
The systems will help secure an efficient, reliable power supply for the Nordural Helguvik smelter, while preventing the power-intensive production process from disrupting the local power grid. The facility will use electricity produced from geothermal energy.
“ABB’s track record, combined with our comprehensive service and product portfolio, are crucial to the success of our customers,” said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division. “Over the years, our leading-edge solutions have helped Nordural Grundartangi to grow its capacity while improving productivity and energy efficiency.”
ABB will provide design, installation and commissioning services for the smelter in Helguvik, which is located west of Reykjavik. The order includes five rectiformer systems, which convert alternating current (AC) to the direct current (DC) needed to operate the smelter, and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems to monitor and control power quality.
The plant is scheduled to start production in late 2010, with an initial capacity of 150,000 tons of molten aluminum per year.
ABB has delivered a similar range of equipment and services to Century, a major supplier of aluminum, for two other smelter projects in Iceland.
ABB’s Process Automation division delivers integrated solutions for control, plant optimization, and industry-specific application knowledge and services to help process industry customers worldwide meet their critical business needs in the areas of operational profitability, capital productivity, risk management and global responsibility. These industries include oil and gas, power, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, metals, minerals, marine and turbocharging.
